Google Earth Scavenger Hunt

by admin — Categories: Stuff That I'm Messing With — Tags: , , 1 Comment

Google Earth is a fun way to explore the world from your computer. It allows you to zoom around the world in 3-D and see famous landmarks and unexpected things around the world. It is like an advanced version of the maps that you find embedded in many web pages.

I put together a Google Earth scavenger hunt for my kids last night and thought I would share it with the Internet. The idea is to hunt for the following items in Google Earth and get a screen shot of the item.

There are a couple different ways to run it. One is to set a time limit and see how many points the player can get in 30 – 60 – 90 minutes. The other is to see how long it takes to get all of the items.

One other rule that has to be clarified before starting is whether or not you are allowed to use the “search” function in Google Earth to find things. Doing that makes it much much easier, but makes the hunt less valuable as a geography or general learning task.

So here are the items that I came up with. (Leave other good ideas in the comments!)
Easy (1 point each):

white car freeway exit sign American flag
Eiffel Tower Seattle Space Needle Washington Monument
a sign with Japanese characters your grandparent’s house a McDonalds
a Starbucks snow a palm tree
a movie theater a bicycle your house

Medium (10 points each):

a firetruck a flying plane a can of Coke
a waterfall a roller coaster a statue of Jesus
two people holding hands someone mowing the grass a bulldozer
a car carrier with cars a horse a bike with a trailer
Cornell University somewhere you’ve gone on vacation a neon sign

Hard (50 points each):

a live bunny a FedEx truck a person dressed like a clown
a submarine a parachute a penguin
an olympics ring sign a helicopter flying a reflection of the Google van that took the pictures
a tandem bicycle a picture of the president a policeman giving someone a ticket

Using this terrific Mega Millions Lottery Simulator I was able to simulate playing the lottery for 10 years. I spent $1040 and I won $73. They are right. That is depressing.

Incredibly Depressing Mega Millions Lottery Simulator!

Words of the Day: Cosmeceutical and Nutricosmetics

by djp3 — Categories: Stuff with BuzzLeave a comment

“Cosmeceuticals represent the marriage of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Examples of products typically labeled as cosmeceuticals include anti-aging creams and moisturizers. Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products with biologically active ingredients purporting to have medical or drug-like benefits. Dermatological research suggests that the bioactive ingredients used in cosmeceuticals do indeed have benefits beyond the traditional moisturizer (e.g., Chen et al., 2005[1]; Zettersten, Ghadially, Feingold, Crumrine, & Elias, 1997[2]). However, despite the reports of benefits from some cosmeceutical products, the term cosmeceutical remains a marketing term, as there are no requirements to prove that the products actually live up to their claims. Therefore it is up to the consumer to decide whether these claims are valid and worth the cost.
An important distinction lies in the delivery method. The “cosmeceutical” label applies only to products applied topically, such as creams, lotions, and ointments. Products which are similar in perceived benefits but ingested orally are known as nutricosmetics.”

“My profession is to me a ministry from God”

“My profession is to me a ministry from God” – there is a lot to think about in this statement. Especially since it comes from a doctor famous for implementing new surgical techniques. This was a monument in the basement of the U.S. Capitol building.

Christians have a hard time telling stories of people who are doing things to the glory of God unless it involves giving up a lucrative career to be a missionary in a jungle. Now that the jungles are disappearing and the people that are there are sending missionaries to the U.S., I think it’s important that new kinds of stories are told about different ways of serving and honoring God.

But much like the patriarchs in Genesis, people often have significant shortcomings despite wanting to do their best for God. It appears that Crawford not only was the first (perhaps second) person to use ether in surgery, but also discovered it’s properties while taking it as a recreational drug at parties.

This sign was seen on campus last night. A sign of the social media times? Or just a fluke?
